So I have been at my field placement for my MSW since 1/2012. I have been transitioning from that perm life since 12/27/11 and all last summer I alternated between braids, Bantu knots, rod sets, and twist outs for a heatless summer. I lasted up until October. Then I got my hair dyed and straightened so I kept up with regular clippings but I was flat ironing every 2 weeks.
Now-
So like I said I’m in field and honestly I was super scared to do any kinky style because I feel like I work in such a non bohemian setting that I would either be ostracized, stared out, or otherwise pulled to the side. At which time we would have a greater issue.
So I got a new idea. Flexi rods. Wear them non stop until my birthday (10/25) (every year since I was 15 years old I’ve done something new to my hair). So today was the day I wore the rods to work.
I. Was. On. Edge. All morning. Literally.
Surprisingly. No one said anything negative to me at least. No awkward looks. Nothing. My co-intern loved it of course. One of patients, his mom loved it, especially since it makes my highlights “pop” :) so all in all it was a good ass day.
BUT I do feel for women of color who can’t wear their kinks and coils out of fear :/ I had a whole speech ready of someone hit me with some bullshit. Lol.
